Sumatriptan Tablets

Sumatriptan tablets are used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura. They help relieve the headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound that often come with migraines. They are not intended for the prevention of migraines.

Sumatriptan belongs to a group of medicines known as triptans (serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonists). It works by narrowing widened blood vessels in the brain and blocking pain signals, which helps to relieve migraine symptoms once an attack has started.

How to take:

• Adults (aged 18–65 years): the usual dose is 50mg at the first sign of a migraine. Some patients may require 100mg.

• If the migraine returns, another dose may be taken after at least 2 hours.

• Do not take more than 300mg in 24 hours.

• Swallow the tablet whole with water.

• Not recommended for children under 18 or adults over 65.

Precautions:

• Do not take if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any of the ingredients.

• Avoid if you have a history of heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or serious liver problems.

• Speak to your doctor before use if you have risk factors for heart disease (such as smoking, diabetes, or being overweight).

• Do not use at the same time as other triptans, ergotamine medicines, or MAOIs.

• Possible side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, flushing, or sensations of tightness/pressure. Seek urgent medical advice if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or severe allergic reaction.
